Côte d’Ivoire Regional Compact

Côte d’Ivoire has the third largest energy system in West Africa and is a key regional energy exporter thanks to its strategic geographic location. The compact will increase regional energy security and reduce energy costs within West Africa by increasing Côte d’Ivoire’s ability to trade electricity on the regional market.

By upgrading Côte d’Ivoire’s electrical grid, the compact will also facilitate the Government of Côte d’Ivoire’s efforts to connect approximately 1.8 million households in Côte d’Ivoire without current access to electricity.

The compact is designed to achieve its objective through one project, comprising the following three activities:

  • Activity 1: The Support for the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market Activity will work with regional electricity actors in the West African Power Pool (WAPP) to help generate a stable marketplace for electricity pricing through creating a day-ahead market.
  • Activity 2: The Modernizing the Grid Network in Côte d’Ivoire Activity will increase energy reliability in Côte d’Ivoire by upgrading and stabilizing the electricity grid network.
  • Activity 3: The Support to Côte d’Ivoire on the Regional Electricity Market Activity will improve the governance and financial viability of the regional electricity market by building the regulatory, financial, and operational capacity of regional energy institutions.
