For more than 70 years, the United States and Nepal have forged a partnership based on shared values, democratic ideals, and trust. From eliminating malaria in the 1950s to providing relief and reconstruction assistance after the 2015 earthquake, and the donation of 1.5 million COVID-19 vaccines, the United States has been there for the people of Nepal in their greatest times of need. The $500 million grant from MCC is a continuation of the strong partnership between the United States and the people of Nepal.
The MCC-Nepal Compact will address two major aspects holding back Nepal’s economy – energy and transportation. The Electricity Transmission Project will provide more sustainable, reliable electricity for Nepali businesses and homes through the construction of more than 300km of high voltage transmission lines. The Road Maintenance Project will lower transportation costs by introducing a new government-run road maintenance program to better build and maintain Nepal’s roads.
