Resilience = Increased Access to Water

  • MCA-Niger

Before the MCC-Niger Compact, the Konni Irrigation Perimeter was crumbling, preventing it from capturing and retaining rainwater for farmers to use during the dry season.

  • MCA-Niger

Through MCA-Niger, the MCC-Niger compact widened and paved the canals and waterways to improve water capture and flow.

The rehabilitation of the Konni Irrigation Perimeter has improved water access for 6,000 smallholder farmers to use in their irrigation.

  • MCA-Niger

The rehabilitated Konni Irrigation Perimeter is the largest in Niger.

Thanks to the irrigation improvements, farmers in the Konni region have greater access to water even during the dry season.

Workers gather around one of the 104 solar-powered water wells established by the compact. These wells support water access year-round for higher value horticulture.

Ensuring crops can grow requires access to adequate water, but in the Sahel, rain is not always a guarantee. To improve rainwater capture during the rainy season, MCC rehabilitated the Konni irrigation perimeter, the largest in Niger. As a result, 6,000 small-scale farmers now have access to water year-round. See some of the before and after photos of the Konni irrigation perimeter and its impact on farmers.
