The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) partners with nations that are committed to good governance, economic freedom and investing in their citizens. From 2006 to 2012, MCC and the elected Government of Mali worked in close partnership to develop and implement a $460 million compact investment to reduce poverty through economic growth in Mali. The compact had been scheduled to conclude on September 17, 2012.
MCC takes seriously its partner countries’ commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law. The recent military coup in Mali directly conflicts with these principles. MCC joins the whole of the U.S. government in calling for full and quick restoration of constitutional civilian rule in Mali.
MCC has halted operations in Mali, and in light of the ongoing situation on the ground, will begin to wind up compact activities. This will include taking steps that safeguard and preserve MCC’s compact investments to date and to protect the safety of individuals affected by those investments.
