For Immediate Release

April 3, 2012

Washington – Millennium Challenge Corporation CEO, Daniel W. Yohannes, led the U.S. Presidential Delegation to Dakar, Senegal to attend the inauguration of President Macky Sall on April 2.

Mr. Yohannes and the delegation met with President Sall following the inauguration to congratulate him on behalf of President Obama and the American people. They discussed Senegal’s ongoing commitment to democratic governance, economic reform, and the country’s important contributions to regional peace, stability and security.

Other members of the delegation included Ambassador Johnnie Carson, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs; Lewis Lukens, United States Ambassador to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau; and General Carter Ham, Commander, United States Africa Command.

“Today is a historic day for Senegal and for democracy in Africa,” said Mr. Yohannes. “The United States looks forward to working with President Sall and his administration to advance our mutual interests for peace, progress and prosperity.”

During the meeting with President Sall, Mr. Yohannes discussed MCC’s $540 million compact with Senegal, which aims to enhance agricultural productivity through the rehabilitation of major national roads, water resources management, and strategic irrigation projects – all of which are key to sustainable economic growth in Senegal. MCC estimates that more than 1.6 million people will benefit from this investment.

While in Senegal, Mr. Yohannes and the delegation also met with Liberia President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf; Burkina Faso President Blaise Campaore; and Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara. For more information about MCC and its programs around the world, go to www.mcc.gov
